19-year-old Tyren Risto is a second son, bound by long tradition to serve in the Imperial military. Normally that would mean filling some stuffy ceremonial post in the capital city, but one rash misdeed has earned Tyren the enmity of the powerful Marro family and the promise he’ll regret it. Now, instead of the capital, Tyren’s first commission relegates him to a backwater garrison on the fringe of the rugged and hostile Outland, where a fiery young native leader is busy rousing his people to rebellion against the Empire. Soon, the flames of war are spreading all through the mountain country. Unprepared, rapidly outnumbered, Tyren is forced to weigh his devotion to duty against his growing doubts about the justice of his own cause. Victory isn’t out of the question, but it will come at a steep price—and Tyren is no longer sure he’s willing to pay.

Thoughts on the Overall Book: I love fantasy books that are based off history or real cultures, so the premise of this book being set in a fantasy version of the Roman era really appealed to me. Though a made up land, the author did her research well into actual Roman culture and it shows in the story. It's also just the kind of book I like to read, about a hero with an overbearing sense of justice who has to defy the odds even when it's most unconventional.

Characters: Tyren was a really good hero, and I liked how he struggled with doing his duty as a soldier, and his own inner longings to see justice done. There was a good supporting cast as well, and I really liked Torian though I wasn't sure I would in the beginning of the book. Ms. McCrina is also very good at making slimy characters such as Tore and Luchain Marro. I really liked the names in this book, they were very unique.

Writing Style: The writing style was good, and fit the story well. Third person from Tyren's point of view and several chapters from Torian's. The description was good and the setting and backstory was handled well in the first chapter so that the reader knew what was going on, but it did not bog down the story. The fight scenes too, were good and realistic and bloody (the way I like them ;) and I also appreciated the fact that when someone got wounded they were actually wounded and not running around in the next hour. There were a lot of twists and turns in this story that I didn't expect and I liked that. I like a story where I can't see what's coming.

Problems/What bothered me: I didn't really have any problems in the story itself, though I might have liked to have a map in the book to show where the places are, but that's just a personal preference for me. I also might have liked to have a cast list especially during the first couple chapters because there were a lot of characters introduced and it was a little hard to keep them all straight at first, but once you get into the story you pretty much know who is who.

Conclusion: I enjoyed this book a lot, and I think it has a lot of potential for a debut author. I eagerly await the sequel!

Recommended Audience: This book reminded me a lot of Rosemary Sutcliff's type of stories, so anyone who enjoys her books would definitely find this one satisfactory in both story line and writing style. Besides that older teens and adults who like either historical fiction with a twist, or historical fantasy would really enjoy it as well.

His Own Good Sword The Cymeriad Amanda McCrina 9781483908564 Books Reviews

My personal policy is to never leave a review unless I can whole-heartedly give a book five solid stars. This one definitely meets that mark with me - and this book is, quite honestly, outside the circle of what I usually look for in a fantasy read. It doesn't have witches or wizards, but there is long, dark lore with such a strong historical fabric as I read I felt as though it really happened. There are no spells or enchantments, though there is a long-standing prophecy that gradually takes hold of the characters and plot in unexpected ways, that had me guessing till the very end.

There is love, loss, betrayal - o so much betrayal! - but it makes the central character, Tyren, so extraordinarily dynamic and complicated.Others have given summaries of the plot, so I will not do so here; but I will say that there was not a single character that felt flat, and every relationship - whole or strained, suspicious or forced - felt so real that I felt that I really knew each and every one of them. I had my favorites, too, but was constantly kept guessing as to who could be trusted, and who was part of the enemy, and how all their unraveling lives would tie together at the end.

Amanda McCrina delivered it all, and with masterful skill.

The story begins subtly, with loyalties and loves strained and frayed, and secrets pressing in from every corner, as Tyren swallows the shame of being posted to the fringes of the empire, as opposed to the glorious commission his family expected, as part of upholding the family name. As the story progresses, though, so does the action, with the kind of masterful tension-building that I rarely see in newly-published novels nowadays. More than that, the plot twists kept me guessing, as murders and betrayals, escapes and imprisonments, drove the plot onward in ways I didn't expect.

His Own Good Sword feels as though it was directly from the complex entanglements of Roman Britain, with a very Celtic-Roman feel that is as rich and original as it is solid and believable. More than that, it lends itself readily to a "King Arthur returns" style tale that is very believable, gorgeously rendered, and with increasing stakes that puts all of the characters - heroes and villains alike - with high stakes they would give anything for.

I impatiently await the second book in this story, as Tyren's predicament in the final scene, though serious, lays the groundwork for an equally engaging continuation of his journey. I would heartily recommend this to anyone who loves to lose themselves in another world and come away feeling as though they have lived a whole other life there.
A friend of mine recommended this book to me, so I got my hands on a copy and quickly devoured it. I do consider myself a connoisseur of young adult literature and I love when I come across something that isn't your typical teen/YA read. This is one of those. The story itself is told in a richer, more mature voice than many YA books and succeeds in immersing you in this foreign land. The world itself is reminiscent of the world of ancient Rome or Greece, set in an empire in conflict with itself. The characters are well thought out, the plot well crafted. My only gripe would be the names. I think one other reviewer mentioned confusion with all the similar sounding names and I agree with them. It was confusing. I was able to keep everyone apart but every so often I would get tripped up on who was who. Other than that, I loved this book and heartily recommending it to anyone who likes good, curl-up-by-the-windowsill novels of bravery, valor, and sacrifice.
3.5 Stars

A well written historical novel that does a good job of transporting the reader to an ancient Roman context. There's lots of beautiful imagery, which I always enjoy, and the political intrigue was interesting. I personally felt that some of the superfluous dialogue tags were a distraction, and I don't really understand why this book has been categorized as a Fantasy novel. But, this is a very good debut novel, and well worth the read for Historical fiction fans in particular. If the author does publish a Fantasy novel or series in the future, I would definitely pick it up as I enjoyed the style.
